1. It's important to have some treats as rewards.
2. Find an area that is quiet and away from distractions.
3. Keep the training sessions short at no more than to 10 - 15 minutes.
Other things you should know:
If training sessions are too long your dog may start to get bored. If your dog does something correct give him a lot of praise and a treat. Don't excite your dog too much or he may lose focus.
Now it's time to learn a few tricks.
Trick #1 - Get your dog to place his paw in your hand
Get your dog to sit. (Hopefully he already knows how to do that.) While saying the word "paw" place your dogs' paw in your hand. Now give him a treat. Continue to repeat the process a few times. Now say the word "paw" but delay taking the paw. If your dog is learning you will notice your dog beginning to lift the paw toward your hand. If he isn't responding start over and once again start to slow your response. It make take more than one training session so keep trying if your dog doesn't get it the first time.
Trick #2 - Get your dog to give you a high five
This trick is similar to the paw in your hand trick. Place a treat in your hand and raise it a little higher than for the paw trick. (Your dog will think you are trying to do the paw trick.) As he reaches for the treat, as taught earlier, say: “high five” and reward him with the treat. This trick should be easier to learn after learning the paw trick.
Trick #3 - Get your dog to jump through a hoop
When you first start trying to teach this trick don't hold the hoop too high. You don't want your dog hurt. Have your dog sit on one side of a hoop. (A hoola hoop is great for this trick.) Try to get your dogs' attention by holding a treat in your hand on the other side of the hoop. He might try to go around or under the hoop. If this happens start again. If your dog wants the treat he will soon learn he needs to go through the hoop. When he goes through the hoop say the word "hoop" or something similar so he'll recognize this as his cue to go through in the future. Give him his treat. Once he catches on he'll be jumping through the hoop on the command.
These easy tricks to teach your dog should help make learning a little less challenging for both of you. Tricks are a fun activity you can do together. You'll enjoy the entertainment and he'll enjoy the treats.
